A Health and Safety Program for Kindergarten through Second Grade Youth

1st Grade Health Standards

This six week, 30 to 40 minute class introduces children to ways to develop a strong, positive self-image and positive character traits through emphasis on the importance of healthy lifestyles and encouraging children to do their best.

Session 1 *

Acquaint the children with the instructor and the program.

View the movie “Meet the Count on Me” Kids.

Discuss the 5 basic “Count on Me” characters and what they stand for.

1.1.1  Identify responsible health behaviors.

1.4.2  Explain that individuals have different cultural backgrounds that influence personal health behaviors.

1.6.1  Explain when to ask for assistance in making health related decisions and setting up health goals.

Session 2

Increase the children’s awareness of trying our best in everything.

Look at events in the child’s life where they have learned the value of trying their best.

Children will learn the importance of caring for themselves and others.

Learn how to give and receive compliments and what to do if someone teases you.

1.1.3  Describe the relationship between physical health and emotional health.

1.3.1  Demonstrate how to apply skills to manage stress.

1.3.2  Demonstrate how to apply coping strategies when feeling anxious, upset, angry, too excited, or out of control.

1.5.1  Distinguish between verbal and nonverbal communication.

1.5.2  Describe characteristics needed to be a responsible friend and family member.

1.5.3  Demonstrate healthy ways to express needs, wants, and feelings.

1.5.4  Demonstrate ways to communicate care and respect of self and others.

1.6.3  Predict outcomes of positive health decisions.

Session 3

Help the children learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Learn about the 5 food groups, how to have healthy snacks, and the importance of rest and exercise.

1.1.1 Identify responsible health behaviors.

1.1.7  Explain how childhood injuries and illnesses can be prevented or treated.

1.2.2  Explain how media influences the selection of health products.

1.2.4  Explain the meaning of basic signs, symbols and warning labels.

1.3.5  Demonstrate personal hygiene skills.

1.6.4  Demonstrate the ability to set short – term personal health goal and monitor progress toward its achievement.

Session 4

Increase each child’s awareness of basic safety rules.

Role play different events that children may encounter where safety is a factor.

1.1.1 Identify responsible health behaviors.

1.3.1  Demonstrate how to apply skills to manage stress.

1.3.2  Demonstrate how to apply coping strategies when feeling anxious, upset, angry, too excited, or out of control.

1.3.6  Demonstrate safety skills needed to avoid injury.

1.6.1  Explain when to ask for assistance in making health related decisions and setting health goals.

Session 5

Learn about good and bad habits.

Discuss the importance of “Saying No” to bad habits like alcohol, drugs, and smoking.

1.1.1 Identify responsible health behaviors.

1.2.1  Identify resources from home, school, and community that provide valid health information.

1.2.3  Explain how media influences the selection of health products.

1.3.1 Demonstrate how to apply skills to manage stress.

1.3.2 Demonstrate how to apply coping strategies when feeling anxious, upset, angry, too excited, or out of control.

1.3.3  Demonstrate ways to avoid and seek help in threatening situations.

1.5.6  Demonstrate refusal skills to enhance health.

1.5.7  Demonstrate positive ways to resolve conflicts.

1.6.1 Explain when to ask for assistance in making health related decisions and setting health goals.

1.7.1  Demonstrate the ability to express information and ideas about health issues.

1.7.2  Demonstrate the ability to influence and support others in making positive health choices.

Session 6 *

Children learn how to deal with Peer Pressure.

Children learn 6 ways to say “NO” through the video “What Would I Do?”

Presentation of Certificates.

1.1.1 Identify responsible health behaviors.

1.2.1  Identify resources from home, school, and community that provide valid health information.

1.2.2  Explain how media influences the selection of health products.

1.3.1 Demonstrate how to apply skills to manage stress.

1.3.2 Demonstrate how to apply coping strategies when feeling anxious, upset, angry, too excited, or out of control.

1.3.3  Demonstrate ways to avoid and seek help in threatening situations.

1.5.6  Demonstrate refusal skills to enhance health.

1.5.7  Demonstrate positive ways to resolve conflicts.

1.6.1 Explain when to ask for assistance in making health related decisions and setting health goals.
