Educational Objectives

Health Standards

Session 1: First Things First

Know the first rule for every emergency

Understand the four-step Emergency Action Plan

Know some things they should do in an emergency, when to get help, how to get help, and what to do until help arrives

The following standards are covered in all the sessions.

4.1.1  Identify responsible health behaviors.

4.1.7  Identify health problems of children that should be detected and treated early.

4.1.8  Explain how childhood injuries and illnesses can be prevented.

4.1.9  Explain basic health terms and concepts.

4.2.1  Identify characteristics of valid health information and health promoting products and services.

4.2.4  Demonstrate the ability to locate school and community health helpers.

4.3.1  Demonstrate how to apply skills to manage stress.

4.3.3  Demonstrate ways to avoid, reduce, and report threatening situations.

4.3.4  Demonstrate the ability to identity personal health needs.

4.3.6  Demonstrate injury prevention and management (first aid) strategies for personal health.

4.6.1  Explain when to ask for assistance in making health related decisions and setting health goals.

Session 3: All Choked Up

Know ways to prevent a choking emergency

Know first aid procedure for choking

Session 4: Ouch!

Know ways to prevent wounds

Know first aid for

  • Small wounds
  • Large wounds
  • Nosebleeds
  • Animal Bites
  • Bruise
  • Fracture
  • Electric shock

Session 5: Famous Fire Facts

Know some ways to prevent fires

Knows ways to develop a Family Fire Escape Plan

Know ways to prevent a burn

Know how to classify burns and how to give First Aid for burns

Session 6: Poison Patrol

Know some ways to prevent poisoning

Be able to identify common household poisons

4.2.5  Analyze information from the labels of health-related products.

4.6.3  Predict outcomes of positive health decisions.

Session 7: Just Say NO!

Know the basic types of drugs and their effects

Be aware of health and safety dangers in use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco

Know common reasons for defense against substance abuse.

Know first aid for substance abuse emergencies

4.5.6  Demonstrate refusal and negotiation skills to enhance health.

4.5.8  Demonstrate nonviolent strategies to resolve conflicts. 

4.6.3  Predict outcomes of positive health decisions.

Session 8: Water Whiz

Know ways to prevent drowning

Know appropriate safety precautions for swimming, boating and ice skating/fishing

Know appropriate rescue procedures for swimming, boating, and ice skating/fishing

Session 9: Lost & Found

Know some ways to prevent getting lost

Know how to make a preparation plan for the wilderness

Know appropriate safety and rescue measures if lost

Session 10: Cautious Kids

Know some ways to stay safe

Know how to identify a stranger

Know appropriate defense tactics for common tricks used by strangers to lure children

Know appropriate action to take if abused

4.5.6  Demonstrate refusal and negotiation skills to enhance health.

4.5.8  Demonstrate nonviolent strategies to resolve conflicts. 

4.6.3  Predict outcomes of positive health decisions.

4.7.4  Demonstrate the ability to influence and support others in making positive health choices.

Session 11: Safe Wheels

Know some ways to prevent motor vehicle injuries

Know the importance of using safety belts, cycling helmets, and knee pads

Know the rules for school bus safety, identify the danger zone

Know some ways to prevent bicycle injuries know bicycle safety rules

Session 12: Review and Test

Review all materials covered

Be tested on material covered

Receive participation or certification for class

This session can be added if the teacher desires that a grade be given for the program.

For American Red Cross certification a student must complete sessions 1-6 and 12. 

Teachers may select do any of the sessions and students will be eligible for a participation certificate.
